Ilias Iakovidis received a Ph.D. in 1990 with thesis on inverse problem in electrocardiography. From 1990 to 1993 he was a postdoctoral fellow in the Biomedical Engineering Institute of the University of Montreal and research associate at the Montreal Heart Institute. In 1993 he joined the European Commission in Brussels.

He is deputy Head of Unit responsible for planning research in eHealth including biomedical informatics. He has published articles on electronic health records, challenges for wider deployment of eHealth, human computer interaction, biomedical informatics and acted as visiting faculty in several graduate courses on medical informatics. He is elected fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics, a member of the advisory and editorial boards of journals and book series on health telematics.
